In Africa, she slept in a tent, cooked over a campfire, and lived each day alongside the baboon colony her parents were studying. Keena Roberts split her adolescence between the wilds of an island camp in Botswana and the even more treacherous halls of an elite Philadelphia private school. ![]() By turns heartbreaking and hilarious, this memoir is ultimately the story of a daring but sensitive young girl desperately trying to figure out if there's any place where she truly fits in.īook Synopsis Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight meets Mean Girls in this funny, insightful fish-out-of-water memoir about a young girl coming of age half in a "baboon camp" in Botswana, half in a ritzy Philadelphia suburb. ![]() ![]() Thompson-Spires explores a myriad of society’s blemishes in this short-story collection, including ableism, bullying, and social class. Thoughts on The Heads of the Colored People Review by Marissa Boglin “The Heads of the Colored People” is a necessary read for any person of color. Boldly resisting categorization and easy answers, Nafissa Thompson-Spires is an original and necessary voice in contemporary fiction. Her stories are exquisitely rendered, satirical, and captivating in turn, engaging in the ongoing conversations about race and identity politics, as well as the vulnerability of the black body. ![]() Thompson-Spires fearlessly shines a light on the simmering tensions and precariousness of black citizenship. Some are darkly humorous - from two mothers exchanging snide remarks through notes in their kids' backpacks to the young girl contemplating how best to notify her Facebook friends of her impending suicide - while others are devastatingly poignant - a new mother and funeral singer who is driven to madness with grief for the young black boys who have fallen victim to gun violence, or the teen who struggles between her upper-middle-class upbringing and her desire to fully connect with black culture. A stunning new talent in literary fiction, Nafissa Thompson-Spires grapples with black identity and the contemporary middle class in these compelling, boundary-pushing vignettes.Įach captivating story plunges headfirst into the lives of new, utterly original characters. ![]() ![]() ![]() Out of their individual stories of drug use and psychological breakdown emerges a larger tale set on another plane of reality that includes incorporeal battles and spirit possession. This environment is fertile ground for a David Mitchell tale as it captures a certain sociopolitical shift by delving into the lives of each band member and explores how their music reflects this era of protest and evolving consciousness. This new novel celebrates the psychedelic music scene of the late 60s by recounting the formation, rise to fame and short-lived career of Utopia Avenue, a fictional band that combines different folk, jazz and rock musicians to make a unique sound. ![]() Mitchell often builds realistic stories about the lives of individual characters into a larger fantastical narrative that bends time and dips into the ethereal. Yet there's something so distinct about his writing style which I thought was exemplified in his most recent (uncharacteristically short) novel “Slade House”. His novels encompass a wide range of subject matter and diverse group of characters. ![]() It's so interesting coming to this novel having read and admired – but not entirely loving - much of David Mitchell's fiction. ![]() 7/7/2023 0 Comments The hidden hand southworth![]() ![]() ![]() Pursuing her own self-interest, Capitola, like Smith’s invisible hand, becomes an agent of positive social change. ![]() But the birthmark also suggests an affinity for Adam Smith’s theory of the market’s “invisible hand,” a tendency for individuals pursuing their own self-interest to collectively maximize the community’s well-being. Capitola’s birthmark, a red “hidden hand” on the inside of her palm, identifies her as her mother’s daughter and the heiress of a large fortune. Both carry signs, inscribed on their bodies, setting them apart from other women and suggesting a range of interpretive possibilities. Both Hester and Capitola Black, the protagonist of Southworth’s novel The Hidden Hand or, Capitola the Madcap (1859), are cut off from family connections and forced to support themselves. Southworth responded to the tropes of the antislavery campaign by imagining a heroine who defied conventional standards of feminine conduct by circulating in the free market. ![]() 7/7/2023 0 Comments Hp lovecraft the dream quest![]() ![]() He knew that for him its meaning must once have been supreme though in what cycle or incarnation he had known it, or whether in dream or in waking, he could not tell. Mystery hung about it as clouds about a fabulous unvisited mountain and as Carter stood breathless and expectant on that balustraded parapet there swept up to him the poignancy and suspense of almost-vanished memory, the pain of lost things, and the maddening need to place again what once had an awesome and momentous place. It was a fever of the gods a fanfare of supernal trumpets and a clash of immortal cymbals. All golden and lovely it blazed in the sunset, with walls, temples, colonnades, and arched bridges of veined marble, silver-basined fountains of prismatic spray in broad squares and perfumed gardens, and wide streets marching between delicate trees and blossom-laden urns and ivory statues in gleaming rows while on steep northward slopes climbed tiers of red roofs and old peaked gables harbouring little lanes of grassy cobbles. ![]() Three times Randolph Carter dreamed of the marvellous city, and three times was he snatched away while still he paused on the high terrace above it.
